RUSSIAN SUITE 1:
CZESNIKI
The morning was gray and damp
when we sat up
The horses moved restlessly
As if they knew
what was going on
The wind drifted from the river
with a smell of mud,
mold and dirt,
from everything that was old
backward and outdated
The village was spread out below us
heavy fortified
but we knew that we would win
That we should absolutely crush
all resistance
and that there was
no other possible outcome
of the Battle of Czesniki
The horse army rolled down
It was a moment of excitement, of joy
For we could not be stopped
Their time was over
Ours was dawning
That was, anyway,
how it was said,
how it was written
And we were absolutely convinced
that it was also true
