Finally, the friendly twinkling lights in the sky disappeared
And also the cheerful crackling of the instruments
Sounds that had made us believe
that maybe there was something
in the dark out there
That we weren't alone, anyway

In disbelief we stared into the black night
And checked again and again the machines that had gone silent

At last, we realised
that those who believed in
higher beings,
And even those who soberly waited for signs from others,
all had been wrong
That we were actually just
alone

We turned our backs on everything amazing and outstanding
and instead started speaking
to each other
It took a while
but when we understood that we were on an island in the dark,
everyone soon
had to take care of themselves
