It was very important that the potatoes were put on
half an hour before the parents came home

It was equally important that no inappropriate things
were discussed so they could hear

A joke with sexual content in the back seat
once made the father so furious that he almost drove off the road

Everything that was not obviously useful and practical
was rejected and ridiculed

But it was not just at home
It was everywhere, in school, and among friends outside in the street

The future was still limitless, but everyone smiled when they heard
the big plans, and said that of course it was allowed to dream

With own experience and greater knowledge the comment became:
Don't dream, just ... do
