MOLDAVIAN DAYS
I returned to the village
after many years of work in the big cities
Where you live like a stranger
among millions of people
The village looked different;
the streets were the same
But they were dirtier, and emptier
There were no young people, and no children:
The school was shut down for more than 20 years

Old Johannes told stories about me as a child
But maybe he confused me with another kid,
because I didn´t remember any of the episodes he was talking about

But the old folk seemed happy to see me,
and organized a little party to my honor
In the end, Johannes took up the accordion
and we sang songs that felt familiar
They looked encouraging at me, and I tried to sing along
but could not remember any words or melodies
They looked disappointed;
I did not belong there,
either
